Aboriginal Education -BOSTES
Picture
The Aboriginal Education Contexts site showcases examples of school-developed context-based teaching and learning projects collaboratively developed by teachers, Aboriginal education workers and local community members. The materials show the educational and cultural journeys of teachers, students and community members in a range of schools and communities in rural and urban areas. Where possible these are recounted through video, audio, digital images and work samples.

History of Aboriginal Sydney
Picture
Excellent site - 'Aboriginal Sydney' includes the area bounded by Picton in the south, Lithgow in the west, and the Wollemi National Park and Norah Head in the north-west and north.
This is an area bigger than the modern Sydney, but we include it in our history because the Sydney Aboriginal people did - and do - recognise it as their country today. Within those areas most Aboriginal people probably understood each other reasonably well.
The site includes timelines, maps, families, sites, culture, events and more.

Rain falls heavily, the streets of the community are quiet, and Moses sits drinking tea on the porch of a house in the community of Numbulwar, Wandu, where he is from, has been flooded in. The country is coming alive with the arrival of the rain; birds walking on lily fronds stoop for prey in the forming lakes. Click to play

Tom E Lewis gives a brief introduction into how Arnhemland society is structured. There are 12 clans in Numbulwar, and the society is divided into two moieties. The two moieties in Arnhemland are water and fire, shark and crocodile. He then introduces us to Junggayi Moses Numamurdirdi, sitting under a tree with his wife’s brother. Junggayi Moses Numamurdirdi describes the arrival of missionaries and the introduction of new social structures and ideologies while archival footage shows baptisms in the river. CLICK to play
Picture
Tom E Lewis introduces the concept of five seasons over footage of an overflowing Rose River – the land inundated with water, followed by a montage of a dry riverbed. Lewis describes the wet season over images of Indigenous men hunting birds, fish and a turtle. Lewis tells us that the people sing songs to the land, rivers and sea. They sing to the spirits of the animals that are hunted. ‘Everything has a cycle, and we are guided by this cycle’, says Lewis. CLICK to play

Aboriginal languages were originally spoken, but not written. To be able to write them, people have had to agree on the best way to represent the sounds of the languages, using the alphabet. In Campfire students will explore some sounds, words and sentences of Aboriginal languages.

The Dreamings from the Saltwater Country
Picture
The Yanyuwa people of Manakurra are the custodians of the Tiger Shark Dreaming song line. Manakurra is situated at the mouth of the Wearyan River on the Gulf coast of the Northern Territory. In this stunning animation, the Tiger Shark swims into the waters of the Gulf of Carpentaria, singing dolphins, dugongs, manta rays, the White-bellied sea eagle, whales and the Rainbow Serpent.
The Groper
Picture
In this spectacular animation, the Groper travels around South West Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria, close to the Northern Territory mainland. She visits different Dreaming countries while creating waterways, plantations and rock formations. The Groper's story belongs to the Wuyaliya clan of the Yanyuma people.
Picture
Dugong Hunters
Picture
The story of the Dugong Hunters, or li-Maramaranja, belongs to the Rrumburriya clan of the Yanyuwa people, who live along the Gulf coast of the Northern Territory. In this story, the dugong hunter Jurruji encounters trouble when he falls into a crevasse on an island in the Gulf of Carpentaria. This story from the Yanyuwa people is one of seven that can be found on ABC Splash.
